Here we go again, meltdown on ITS. Probably deserved this time but yikes, come on people, from "we are a bubble team" to "fire the coach we suck" is a bit extreme. No bones about it, we blew this game and blew it bad. Worst meltdown since the... cant even talk about it. I had this one marked down as a loss all year, but I had some hope because we were have been playing pretty well and UCF has been terrible the last few games. This is what happens when your best player is out of position. You are wildly inconsistent, especially on the road. Uzoh took a whopping 6 total shots in the UCF loss, 4 of those were 3 pointers. He did manage 8 FTs but we need his official attempts in the 12-15 range.
Our defense really hurt us the last 10 minutes. The officials called it tight and we just could not adjust. Up 13 and fouls mounting would have been a great time to go to a zone in spurts. I am baffled why we dont spring it from time to time. It is perplexing.
The biggest dissappointment of the night, came near the end. We had blown a huge lead and needed a score with around a minute left, I believe we were just down 1 or 2. We come down on offense and.... GET A SHOT CLOCK VIOLATION? Are you freaking kidding me? Wow...
The last play was part fluke and part bad defense. You have to make a guy work harder than that, deny the ball, make him throw a hard pass, etc. The most unfortunate thing about it is that I almost expected it. We have really made poor decisions on the bench in every close game but UAB.
Where does this leave us? I still think we are an NIT team. Even if we lose 2 more games our RPI will be around 80 which would put us on the bubble and with TUs history, and a possible match up with OSU or Arkansas, I believe they would put us in.
If we somehow find a way to miss the NIT, then we need to pass on the CBI. It will be a huge failure this year. There are 1500 people who will care, MAX.

Good post. I agree with almost all of it, for once.
ReplyDeleteSouthern Miss played a zone against Memphis on Saturday and it kept them in the game in the 1st half.
I don't want to play in the CBI again, either. It was nice last year, but it won't work this year if we want to argue that the program is improving.
